Buddies in Bad Times is excited to renew their relationship with Crow's Theatre for the 2008-2009 Season, with uber-talented, non-compromising director Chris Abraham in the role of new Crow's Theatre Artistic Director. The coupling of Abraham with the always imaginative O'Donnell has resulted in this highly original, incredibly intricate, not-to-be-missed production of [boxhead]. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more engaging piece of contemporary theatre. Anton Piatigorsky's Eternal Hydra, a second Crow's production, premieres in May 2009 as part of Buddies' 30th anniversary lineup.

[boxhead] synopsis
A young geneticist wakes up to discover a box secured to his head; he finds all his thoughts come from God, all his words come from the devil and his desire for love is a habit acquired from the movies. Sound familiar? Don't be so hard on yourself. From the addled consciousness that brought you Diplomatic Immunities and White Mice comes [boxhead]: a bedtime story for your brain.

An intricately woven semantic circus, [boxhead] is a bucolic frolic through the pathetic nightmarish minefield of Western consciousness filled with omniscient narrators, metaphysical ruminations, musical numbers and poop jokes ... all set to the live accompaniment of musician/composer Romano Di Nillo.

The two scientists, Dr. Wishful Thinking and Dr. Thoughtless Actions, take a mile-a-minute metaphysical journey through human cloning, the nature of time, the echo-less yell, and life outside the confines of the box.
This Crow's Theatre/Mammalian Diving Reflex joint production reunites O'Donnell and Abraham, along with the original design team of Naomi Campbell, Steve Lucas and Nina Okens, and will feature and a new cast with Adam Lazarus playing Dr. Wishful Thinking and Andrew Shaver in the role of Dr. Thoughtless Actions. Coach House Books is set to publish the long-overdue book of Darren O'Donnell's [boxhead] this October. The book includes the full text of the play, musical score and an introduction by the playwright.
